Managing Director, Hawthorn Timber

James joined the Stone family-business as a young man, and has progressed his way through the business to the role of Production Director at Hawthorn Timber. In April 2021, James was part of the Management Buy-out team led by the then Managing Director, Richard Thompson; with the backing from European PE investor Nimbus. During this time, Hawthorn Timber has continued to grow, building on its reputation for quality, diversification of product ranges (softwood, panel products, bespoke machined items) and reliable customer service.

In December 2025, James became Managing Director of Hawthorn Timber.

As Managing Director, James brings extensive experience from across the timber industry, with a strong track record of leadership, commercial strategy, and operational excellence. Having worked across multiple areas of the business over many years, he has developed deep insight into timber sourcing, processing, distribution, and market dynamics.

James’ focus going forward is on building sustainable, high-performing businesses through long-term relationships, responsible timber practices, and a commitment to quality and innovation. He works closely with clients, suppliers, and industry partners to ensure the business remains competitive, resilient, and aligned with evolving market and environmental expectations.

With a hands-on leadership style and a clear strategic vision, James is committed to driving growth while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and integrity across all operations.
